Competitor discovery
How to use it
Price new products against the real market:
- Create a product and open the Market Context step. (Products → Create → Step 3)
- Flip on "Find similar products online."
- Review the matches — the best one auto-fills competitor price & URL.
- Set your price with that anchor in view.
⏱ ~2 min per product · 💳 Pro · 🎯 A real pricing anchor, no manual Googling
Why this matters for your business
Pricing a new product blind is guesswork. The right anchor is what comparable products actually sell for right now — but hunting that down by hand, per SKU, is tedious enough that most merchants skip it. Competitor discovery makes it a single toggle during product creation: flip it on and the platform brings back the market context you'd otherwise Google for manually.
How it works
The pipeline crosses three trust boundaries — an AI call, a search API, and arbitrary merchant-supplied URLs — and each gets its own guard:
- AI query distillation. The product is condensed into a tight shopping query. This runs through the platform's governed AI layer, so it's rate-limited, budgeted, and logged like every other AI call.
- Search. The query hits a Google-Shopping search and returns candidate listings.
- SSRF screening. Every candidate URL is validated before any fetch — blocked, private, or malformed URLs are dropped, never requested. This is the critical safety property: the feature reaches out to the open web, but only through screened, public URLs.
The results are ranked by similarity, and the best "top match" is auto-filled into the competitor price and URL fields on the product — giving you an immediate pricing anchor you can accept or override.
Best practices
✅ Use it as a starting anchor, not gospel. The top match is a strong signal; your positioning (brand, bundle, service) can justify pricing above or below it.
✅ Turn it on for new or repriced SKUs where you don't already know the market rate.
❌ Don't treat the lowest competitor price as your target. Racing to the bottom erodes the margin the rest of the platform works to protect.
