Step 1 · Pick an audience

What you'll do

Pick a specific audience for your first campaign — narrow enough to be measurable, wide enough to learn from. By the end of this step, you'll have a segment with a real number of customers and a clear hypothesis about what they'll respond to.

Why narrow first

It's tempting to send your first campaign to everyone. Resist. A blast to "all customers" teaches you nothing — the result averages across people who'd buy anyway, people who never buy, and people offended by being contacted. A narrow segment teaches you something real and is the foundation of every future campaign.

Step-by-step

1. Open Segments

From the in-app sidebar: Sales engine → Segments.

You should see a list of built-in segments (Active customers, At-risk, New, etc.) plus any you've created.

2. Click + New segment

Name it something specific to the campaign you're planning. Examples that work:

  • Q2 launch — VIP customers, opted-in WhatsApp
  • Win-back — 60-90d inactive, repeat purchasers
  • Cart-recovery boost — abandoned in last 7 days, > $80 AOV

Vague names like My first segment come back to haunt you in 3 months.

3. Pick the rules

The rule builder shows every signal you have on the customer. For a first campaign, start with 2–3 rules combined with AND. More than 3 and you're often selecting too narrow.

Good starter rule combinations:

GoalRules
Reach loyal customersLifecycle = Active · Total orders ≥ 3 · Last order in last 90d
Recover at-riskLifecycle = At-risk · Last order 60–120d ago · Total spend ≥ $200
VIP outreachPredicted LTV (12mo) ≥ $500 · Email opt-in = true

4. Watch the size estimate

The rule builder shows you a live count of matching customers. You want at least 200 customers for the first campaign (statistical noise drowns out smaller groups), but less than 5,000 so you can spot patterns clearly.

If it's too small: drop one rule. Too large: add a tighter rule (region, plan, recency).

5. Save the segment

Click Save. The system starts maintaining membership immediately — new customers entering / leaving the rules are added or removed in seconds.

Verify

Open the segment you just saved. You should see:

  • A customer count matching the estimate (±2%).
  • A list view with at least the first 50 customers.
  • A "rule preview" panel showing the rule logic.

What you have now

A named, maintained audience that the campaign you're about to build will target. The segment will be there next quarter too — segments are reusable.

What you'll do next

Step 2 — write the message body, pick the channel, set the send time. The audience you just built will be the recipient list.
