Star rating
Why this matters for your business
Reviews are the most-trusted form of social proof in e-commerce. Customers trust them more than brand copy, influencer endorsements, or paid ads. The store that surfaces reviews well wins the consideration moment; the store that hides them under a tab loses.
Star rating widgets do two jobs simultaneously:
- Storefront display — show aggregate rating + review count on product pages, collection cards, and search results. Lifts CTR and conversion.
- Schema markup — emit JSON-LD
Product+AggregateRatingschema so Google can show stars in search results (rich snippet). Lifts organic CTR by 30-100%.
Most stores either (a) don't display reviews well or (b) miss the schema, leaving Google's stars on the table. The widget handles both.
What this typically unlocks
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Product-page conversion | +8-15% with rating display |
| Google rich-snippet stars | eligible if 5+ reviews |
| Organic CTR (with rich snippet) | +30-100% |
| Time to install | 30 seconds |
What you actually get
| Surface | Display |
|---|---|
| PDP | Stars + review count near title |
| PDP detail block | Full reviews with sort/filter |
| Collection card | Compact stars on product thumbnails |
| Search result snippet | Auto-emitted JSON-LD AggregateRating |
| Cart line item | Compact stars (Pro+) |
Review source
Reviews can come from:
- Built-in review collection (post-purchase journey asks for review)
- Imported from Loox / Judge.me / Yotpo (CSV import)
- Imported from Shopify Product Reviews (default)
The platform unifies them into one display + schema.
Real merchant scenarios
Scenario A — Beauty brand sees +12% PDP conversion
Setup. Brand had reviews in a tab below the fold. Activated star rating prominently above-the-fold.
60-day result:
- PDP conversion: 2.1% → 2.4% (+14%)
- Average dwell time on PDP: −18 sec (faster decisions)
- Customer questions about quality: −20% (review answer was visible)
Scenario B — Google rich snippet boost
Setup. Brand had ~50K monthly organic visitors. Activated schema markup.
Within 4 weeks (Google indexing time):
| Metric | Pre | Post |
|---|---|---|
| % of products with rich-snippet stars | 0% | 78% |
| Organic CTR (averaged) | 4.2% | 6.8% (+62%) |
| Organic visitors | 50K | 81K (+62%) |
The +31K monthly visitors came at $0 incremental cost. Pure schema win.
Scenario C — Brand catches a review-skew problem
Setup. Star rating displayed average 3.4 stars on one product that should be ~4.5. Investigation: 60 reviews including 12 old 1-star reviews from a quality issue years ago.
Decision. Flagged old reviews for inactive-product disposition (kept, but moved to "Verified historical" bucket). Rating recalculated to current quality: 4.5 stars.
Compliance: No reviews were deleted (would be misleading). Old reviews remain in the detail view; aggregate prioritizes recent.
Scenario D — Importing competitor reviews
Setup. Brand migrating from Yotpo. Wanted to keep 8 years of accumulated reviews.
Process:
- Export reviews from Yotpo (CSV)
- Import to platform via UI
- Map product IDs (Shopify GID matching)
- Verify display on PDPs
Result: Zero data loss; star rating + schema went live within 1 day of migration. Yotpo subscription cancelled ($199/month savings).
Best practices
✅ Display stars above the fold. Below-the-fold reviews might as well not exist.
✅ Show review count, not just stars. "4.5 stars (234 reviews)" > "4.5 stars" — the count is the trust signal.
✅ Activate schema. Google rich snippet is one of the highest-leverage SEO improvements.
✅ Send review-request emails 14 days post-purchase. Default in post-purchase journey.
❌ Don't fake reviews. Google penalizes; customers see through it.
❌ Don't filter out negative reviews from display. Mix of ratings (some 4-stars, even some 3-stars) is more trustworthy than all-5-stars.
❌ Don't display rating if you have < 5 reviews. Looks sparse; consider hiding until threshold met.
